Effective questioning is at the heart of great teaching. This online workshop explores how intentional, well-structured questions can engage learners, spark curiosity, and drive deeper understanding. Participants will learn practical techniques for planning, delivering, and refining questions to maximise student participation and formative assessment. By leveraging high-impact questioning strategies, educators can create more interactive, evidence-rich classrooms that improve learning outcomes for every student.
Teachers will finish this workshop confident in using questioning as a powerful tool to drive engagement, participation, and achievement, aligned to the latest evidence from the High Impact Teaching Strategies framework.
The 3hr online workshop will focus on the following outcomes:
Understand the role of questioning in stimulating student interest and linking new concepts to prior knowledge
Recognise different purposes and types of classroom questions, and plan questions in advance to promote thinking and dialogue
Implement open and probing questions to encourage diverse opinions, discussion, and argument in lessons
Use questioning as an immediate source of feedback to check student understanding and guide next instructional steps
Apply strategies like ‘cold call’ and ‘strategic sampling’ to ensure all students are included and accountable
Integrate questioning seamlessly into formative assessment for real-time adjustment of teaching practices
Develop questioning sequences that build on each other and support both surface and deep learning
Reflect on questioning techniques to continually improve classroom practice and support metacognition in students
